1. Sojourner Truth’s real name was Isabella Baumfree

2. She was born in 1797, on the Colonel Johannes Hardenbergh estate in Swartekill, New York

3. Her parents were Elizabeth and James Baumfree and both were also slaves… She had 12 siblings

4. She was sold at the age of 9 to John Neeley, along with a herd of sheep for $100

5. Sojourner Truth only spoke Dutch until she was sold to the Neeley family… they only spoke English… she learned to speak English quickly because she was severely beaten when she didn’t understand what the family was saying… she was sold several times after that and treated very badly

6. She was forced to marry and older slave named Thomas and they had four children: Peter, James, Elizabeth, and Sophia

7. Dumont, her last owner, promised Sojourner freedom, but broke his promise… she left one morning with her infant daughter, Sophia

8. She wandered, praying for direction, and came to the home of Isaac and Maria Van Wagenen… Dunmont found her and wanted to take her baby when she refused to leave with him… the Van Wagenen’s paid Dunmont $20 for her and she remained with them until state emancipation on July 4, 1827

9. Sojourner Truth had a life-changing religious experience while living with the Van Wagenen family… she became an amazing preacher… she eventually became a traveling preacher… and in later years became a political activist, fighting for the freedom of slaves and women’s rights

10. Sojourner Truth died on November 26, 1883, in Battle Creek Michigan, at the age of 86… she has been honored many times since her death

1. Harriet Tubman was named Araminta Ross when she was born in 1850 in Bucktown, Maryland

2. Araminta changed her name to Harriet to honor her mother, and when she married John Tubman her last name changed also

3. When Harriet was twelve years old an overseer threw an iron weight at her and struck her in the head… she was standing up for another slave… for the rest of her life she suffered from blackouts and headaches

4. At the age of 30 in 1849, Harriet ran away to the North and ended up in Philadelphia… she learned about a movement to abolish slavery and a group of people who were dedicated to helping slaves escape to the North… these people created the Underground Railroad

5. The Underground Raillroad wasn’t an actual railroad… It was a path that slaves traveled at night with the help of conductors, or people who guided them from safehouse to safehouse until they had reached the North… the station masters were the people who lived at the safehouse… these houses could be identified by the candles or lanterns that sat in the window

6. Harriet made about 13 trips to the South and helped hundreds of slaves reach the safety of the North

7. When the Civil War broke out, Harriet Tubman worked as a cook, nurse and spy for the Union Army

8. Harriet Tubman was known as Moses after the Biblical Moses. He led his people out of Egypt and Harriet led her people out of the South and out of slavery

9. She worked for the rights of African Americans until she died on March 10, 1913, at the age of 93

10. Harriet Tubman has been honored many times since her death for her bravery and humanitarian efforts
