1.  The Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years, but in the past 100 years, people have caused a great deal of damage. We have destroyed 80% of the Earth’s forest and 40% of the Earth’s tropical rainforests.

2.  Every day, 50 to 100 species of plants and animals become extinct as their habitat and human activities destroy them.

3.  Deserts are taking over much of the land area on the Earth. Droughts, the spread of building projects, and the cutting down of our forests has led to this problem.

4.  An average American creates 4.5 pounds of garbage a day. That amount has doubled from 30 years ago.

5.  Over 100 pesticide ingredients are suspected to cause birth defects, cancer, and gene mutations.   These illnesses cause trillions of dollars that is being spent on healthcare.

6.  The U.S. burns 10,000 gallons of gasoline a second. Burning one gallon of gas creates 22 pounds of carbon dioxide. That equals 220,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per second. Human and animal life cannot breathe carbon dioxide.   Oxygen is needed for those life-forms to exist.

7.  40% of the Earth’s waterways are undrinkable.

8.  The United States has 5% of the world's population and 30% of the world’s waste.

9.  Homeowners use up to 10 times more toxic chemicals per acre than farmers.  

10.  Much of the destruction of the Earth, its plants and its animals  could be decreased if people all over the world would Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Everyone also needs to decrease the amount of energy and fuel that is used.
