Connecticut is the southernmost state in the northeastern region of the United States known as New England. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west, and Long Island Sound to the south. - The first European contact of the native inhabitants of Connecticut was with the Dutch trader Adriane Block near the present Hartford. In 1614 until the first settlement in Windsor 20 years later. Hartford was also established a year after by the colonist from Massachusetts.
- John Haynes became the first governor in 1639 until it joined the New England Confederation four years later. By 1774, Connecticut sent a representative to the First Continental Congress meeting held in Philadelphia. They participated to the American Revolutionary War with their native Benedict Arnold against the British colonists.
- In 1788, Connecticut joined the Union and became 5th state of America. Sixty years later, slavery was abolished. By 1974, Ella Grasso was elected as the first woman governor of the state.
- Today, its industry is known for the production of nursery stock (trees, shrubs, flowers), eggs, dairy products, cattle, and tobacco. The state’s most famou citizens are George W. Bush (US President), Dean Acheson (statesman), Ethan Allen (Revolutionary War general), Benedict Arnold (Revolutionary War general), P. T. Barnum (showman), Katherine Hepburn (actress), Harriet Beecher Stowe (author), Noah Webster (lexicographer), and Paul Newman (actor)
