A magical season bursting with life and activity, spring follows winter and precedes summer. Because the seasons in the northern and southern hemispheres are opposite, it’s spring from March to June in the northern hemisphere and September to December in the southern.
Spring is a beautiful, temperate season and has come to represent birth, renewal and even resurrection. After a cold and dark winter, when many trees have lost their leaves and the ground is perhaps covered in snow, the sun starts to feel warmer, the days lengthen, birds begin to return from their migration, animals like squirrels and bears wake up from their hibernation, plants sprout new leaves and buds, and frozen waterways thaw.
For many birds and animals it’s a time to raise their young. You’ll hear the chirping of birds calling to each other in the hopes of finding a mate, baby deer hiding in the grass, young fox cubs playing with each other and a train of ducklings and goslings taking to the water with their parents.
Spring is so abundant with life, color and activity that it inspires artists and musicians alike. Vivaldi composed The Four Seasons in 1721 with violins playing light, vibrant and energetic melodies synonymous with spring. Even artistic greats like Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh drew inspiration from this season with their evocative paintings.
Spring isn’t just a time of enjoyment for people – Asian countries like Japan, China and Korea revel in the spectacle of abundant cherry blossoms and Western countries celebrate May Day – it’s also a time of religious reflection. Easter in the northern hemisphere coincides with spring to symbolize the resurrection of Jesus Christ, as does Carnival to celebrate the end of Lent. Hindus also welcome spring with the celebration of Holi, the most famous activity of this festival of color is throwing colorful powder.
